Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, and Organic Alternatives
For some people, the most important reason to buy organic foods and clothes is because buying organic is the only way to ensure that you’re not buying genetically modified organisms (GMOs). There are many who question the safety of GMOs both for our bodies and for our environment. For example, someone allergic to one compound not normally found in a regular tomato might find they’re allergic to a genetically modified tomato which contains genes from another organism.
Alternately, a farmer growing GMOs cannot contain his crops and prevent them from pollinating other crops – a bad can of worms to open, if you catch the drift. At any rate, If you’re not sure how safe GMOs are for your body or are concerned about their effects on our environment, the only way to ensure you’re not buying them is to purchase organic goods. Organic clothes, organic coffee, organic dairy products, organic herbs and spices, organic grains, organic fruits, organic beans, organic squash, all types of organic options are available. You might even say the world’s original gardner was organic! (Although, if one reads A Green History of the World one will see that since the earliest days of civilization, “conventional” farming has been exhausting for the earth.)
